A House That Shows Just How Beautiful Simple Can Be

Built in 1901, the “Arts and Crafts Home” in South London was nothing noteworthy until it was bought by a new Australian homeowner is August of 2009. She transformed this drab home into a beautiful piece of modern design by using her interior design intuition. When asked what she would tell other homeowners, this Australian home owner told Ideal Home, “Don’t rush decisions as it’s easy to make a mistake and it will cost you in the long run.”

Her home is more than enough to prove this advice true. Her bedroom shows off exquisitely the ability of highlights to make simple colors beautiful. Her walls an off-white, her bed is covered in a Moroccan wedding blanket whose textures and colors were a great starting point for the rest of the bedroom. By using simple touches of a metallic gold and neutral grays and browns, this home owner transferred her simplistic bedroom into a masterpiece.

Her kitchen and dining room are much the same. This home was designed before the rise of minimalism in interior design, so it couldn’t have been inspired by the fad. However, describing the kitchen and dining area is most simply boiled down to calling it minimalist. In the kitchen you’ll find no excess. Three open chairs with a wood back sit at a metallic white island, painted the same color as the refrigerator. All cabinet and cupboard material are stowed away inside of the island, leaving the space as open as possible. The dining room sits on the other side of an open wall from the living room, with six open off white chairs sat at a dark wood table. On the opposite side of the living room is a glass wall, and neutral brick sits across from the kitchen.

Her home office sits in the corner of the living room, staring out at the dining table. Her stark white desk sits on metal legs, with a black swivel chair entrenched under it. Beneath both the chair and desk is a white fur rug that fully completes the look of the home office. One of wall of the living room is covered by a huge book shelf, that would normally look absolutely terrible. Being an intuitive designer, however, this homeowner painted the bookshelves a deep blue. This juxtaposes the bright white of the home office, but settles in with the deep color of the books to create a warm feeling around the books.

  1. Would you be able to tell me where I can buy the wooden table from the 1901 arts and crafts house in London?
