A Colorful Riverside Apartment With a Japanese Twist

Turquoise kitchen cabinets, a mustard-yellow sofa, a pink velvet bed, and some seriously beautiful wallpaper. This 180-square-meter apartment by ART Spixe Studio has plenty of color, but nothing feels out of place.

Overlooking a river, the apartment belongs to a mother of two who loves contemporary design, bold colors, and Japanese influences. She had one particularly ambitious request: to turn part of her 120-square-meter terrace into an indoor living space with a real wood-burning fireplace.

A Living Room That Used to Be a Terrace

The designers enclosed part of the terrace with a custom glass structure, added underfloor heating, and created a winter garden that can be enjoyed all year.

The fireplace was a challenge. It’s enormous, so the team covered part of it with mirrored panels that reflect the trees and sky outside.

The curved teal chairs and custom-made yellow sofa bring color into the room without blocking the views. It’s probably my favorite space in the apartment. Imagine sitting by the fire on a rainy afternoon, looking out over the river.

A Kitchen That Makes a Case for Turquoise

The turquoise kitchen is impossible to ignore, and I mean that in the best way.

Designed by Rossana, it features floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, black countertops, and simple white subway tiles. The dining area has a round wooden table, blue upholstered chairs, and patterned Roman blinds.

I especially like how the turquoise continues onto the door frames. It’s a small detail, but it makes the whole apartment feel connected.

Bedrooms Full of Pattern and Personality

The bedrooms take a more decorative approach, with botanical wallpapers, velvet upholstery, and custom furniture.

One bedroom pairs a deep teal headboard with oversized tropical leaves and a golden armchair. It’s a bold combination, but the muted colors keep it from feeling overwhelming.

The master bedroom has a completely different look.

Artist Sergey Gutan painted a Japanese-inspired mural featuring trees and flowers that continues across the door. A custom pink upholstered bed sits against it, adding a lovely contrast to all those greens.

The master suite also includes a walk-in wardrobe and a private shower room.

In another room, a built-in desk, pale blue seating, and a cabinet with little arched niches make excellent use of the space. I particularly love those arches. They’re such a simple way to make storage more interesting.

Bathrooms With Their Own Personality

The bathrooms continue the apartment’s colorful approach.

One features green geometric tiles, floating cabinets, and black fixtures. Another uses glossy navy-blue tiles, a round illuminated mirror, and a vanity combining white surfaces with warm wood.

Why This Apartment Works

What makes this home interesting isn’t simply the amount of color. It’s how the designers use it.

The turquoise kitchen, botanical wallpapers, and pink bedroom might seem like unlikely neighbors, but the recurring greens and blues tie everything together.

And despite the custom furniture, elaborate murals, and long renovation, the apartment doesn’t feel like a showroom.

It feels like someone who loves beautiful things actually lives here.
