Some renovations are about adding more. This one is about refining what was already there.
Set inside an Art Deco apartment overlooking Sydney Harbour, The Gentleman by YSG Studio transforms a beautiful heritage home through subtle architectural changes, remarkable craftsmanship, and one of the richest material palettes we’ve seen in a long time. Raised doorways, sculptural ceilings, polished metal, richly figured timber and deeply personal references combine to create an apartment that feels quietly luxurious rather than attention-seeking.
An Art Deco Apartment Given Room to Breathe

Rather than dramatically reconfiguring the apartment, YSG Studio focused on improving the experience of moving through it.

Doorways were raised, ceilings subtly lifted, and openings widened to create gentler transitions between rooms. Streamlined joinery eliminates visual clutter, while a custom angled banquette makes the dining room feel naturally integrated instead of squeezed into an awkward corner.

An oversized abstract artwork introduces soft peach and terracotta tones that echo the home’s warm palette, while an illuminated sculptural pendant floats overhead like a glowing halo.
The bespoke dining table showcases exquisite timber craftsmanship, balanced by contemporary dining chairs and a built-in banquette that makes the room feel welcoming rather than formal.
Large linen curtains soften every edge, filtering daylight into a warm, almost cinematic glow.
It’s the kind of renovation that feels effortless precisely because so much thought has gone into proportions.
Warm Colour Wrapped Around Sculptural Architecture

The living room immediately sets the tone.
Rich caramel walls wrap around the space like tailored wool, creating an atmosphere that feels intimate despite the generous ceiling height. Above, glossy magnolia-white swirls sweep across the ceiling almost like reflected clouds or musical vibrations, transforming what could have been a flat surface into something quietly expressive.
Those flowing forms continue throughout the shared spaces, subtly connecting each room.
Instead of relying on decorative mouldings alone, the ceiling becomes part of the architecture’s personality.
A Material Palette That Rewards Looking Closer

One of the apartment’s greatest strengths is its remarkable combination of materials.
Rather than choosing one dominant finish, YSG layered together:
- Lauriana quartzite
- polished aluminium
- stainless steel
- curly maple
- fiddleback blackwood
- Huon pine
- Tasmanian myrtle
- Flemish glass
- terrazzo
- linen
- wool
- silk
It sounds like an unlikely collection on paper, yet inside the apartment every surface feels connected.
The polished aluminium cabinetry introduces a cool precision, while richly figured Australian timbers soften the overall composition. Linen curtains diffuse Sydney’s bright light, wool rugs absorb sound, and silk textiles quietly elevate the furnishings without becoming precious.
Nothing feels excessive because every texture has room to breathe.
A Kitchen Defined by Dramatic Quartzite

If there is one unforgettable moment, it may be the kitchen.
Lauriana quartzite wraps across the splashback and range hood like an enormous abstract painting. Its sweeping veins in olive, charcoal, cream and smoky blue create movement that no manufactured surface could replicate.

Against it, brushed aluminium cabinetry almost disappears, allowing the stone to take centre stage.
It’s a reminder that natural materials often provide all the decoration a room needs.
Personal History Woven Into the Design

Perhaps the most meaningful aspect of the project isn’t immediately visible.
Patterned textiles and bespoke timber details reference the geometric motifs of ancient ćilim rugs, quietly honouring one homeowner’s Bosnian-Croatian heritage.
Rather than becoming a themed interior, these influences are woven subtly throughout the apartment.
They add another layer to the story without ever overwhelming it.
It’s a beautiful reminder that the most memorable homes often reflect the people who live there rather than the latest design trend.
Quiet Luxury That Doesn’t Need to Announce Itself

There are no unnecessary gestures here.
No oversized marble islands competing for attention.
No dramatic feature walls trying to become Instagram moments.
Instead, The Gentleman demonstrates something increasingly rare: confidence through restraint.
Beautiful materials, careful craftsmanship, thoughtful proportions and deeply personal references come together to create an apartment that feels timeless rather than fashionable.
And perhaps that’s exactly what makes it so memorable.
