Contemporary Duplex Located At The Top Of An 1888 Former Parish House

When you enter a penthouse duplex apartment and it feels like you’ve walked into a basement, something isn’t right. That’s what happened when AMMOR Architecture first arrived to look at a project in the former parish house at St. George’s church. The building was converted into The ABBEY condominiums in the 1990’s but the relationship between the interior and the 1888 Landmarked exterior was … unholy.

“The design mission became to reconcile past sins- where dormer windows sat on the floor and other windows with great views were too high. We resolved to flood the interior with light and play up the drama of the angled walls. The demolition revealed beautiful historic steel structure that heretofore had been covered with drywall. The new design allows the most unique aspects of the space to inform the new layout. The existing metalwork remained exposed and inspired many of the architectural details, lighting and furniture choices.”
