Beautiful Living Space on a Budget
When Madelynn Furlong, an assistant designer at Target and her husband Caylon, moved from New York to Minnesota, Madelynn used her design skills to transform their new loft, into a Nordic inspired haven. To discover how Madelynn and Caylon, managed to transform a bare loft into a natural, minimalist abode, simply continue reading!
One of the biggest challenges Madelynn had to work around, was the fact that as she and her husband were leasing their new home, they’d have to work around items, which they couldn’t remove. Examples of which included outdated light fixtures and counter tops, that hadn’t been replaced for twenty years.
To work around such items, Madelynn and Caylon, created custom furniture pieces, which would update the look of their home whilst complimenting the aesthetic of the space which they were working with. By choosing to craft their own pieces of furniture, Madelynn and Caylon, also managed to save several thousand dollars.
When it came to design inspiration, Madelynn drew inspiration from the beauty of the great outdoors and incorporated a variety of wooden pieces, in various shades of light wood, into her home. Madelynn also choose furniture and decorations in neutral shades, which would evoke the feeling of being outside in the great outdoors, whilst being indoors.
However, as Madelynn worked with a neutral color scheme she incorporated a variety of statement pieces such as a quirky blackboard door, decorative antlers and faux fur rugs and throws, in to her design scheme in order to add a little pizzazz to her home. If you love the idea of opting for a neutral color scheme and are keen to take a leaf out of Madelynn’s design book, you may want to hunt down a few decorative statement pieces of your own.
One way Madelynn and Caylon, managed to keep to their budget was by purchasing design pieces, such as decorations on websites such as Craigslist and browsing through antique stores in the weekend for unique pieces. Madelynn also encourages budding interior designers to keep an eye out for companies who offer warehouse sales, that are open to the public. As by shopping at a warehouse sale, you’ll be able to pick up high quality pieces, that are designed to last, for the fraction of their retail price.
So if you’re looking to redecorate your home, it’s well worth borrowing a few of Madelynn Furlong’s design ideas as her Nordic inspired Minnesota loft, is a design triumph.
