Once a dark barn, Marie Alexander’s home is now a pale beauty, artfully punctuated by Gidled Flourishes. “What I saw was a little brown barn full of little brown rooms,” says Marie Alexander. Â A year or so later, the little barn had been transformed into a vision of white, open space.
“Joris is a designer who understands period architecture and realizes that modernising old properties in a contemporary manner doesn’t mean ripping out all the architectural details that gives them character,” explains Marie. “He’s master at creating a sense of light and space and is also very practical.”
When Joris was invited to see the barn to give his professional opinion, he agreed that once many of the internal walls were demolished, the building would gain a sense of openness and light.
One of the few dashes of colour in the house comes from a still life painting by a French artist, which Marie bought 30 years ago.
Marie painted her cherished cherrywood dining table a pale grey and paired it with rubber-covered seating to give it a modern edge for her new home.
Continuing the gilded theme, storage trays have been painted gold.
Inspiredflourishes of colour in this former garage include pink chairs.
This vast beamed roof space is Marie’s personal retreat, complete with a statement bath in the middle of the room.
