A Los Angeles Home That Perfects 70s Glam — Starting With Its Sunken Bar

Some homes just have it. That intangible mix of nostalgia, warmth, and modern polish. This Los Angeles home, designed by Alana Marie, has all of that — and then some. The charm is reminiscent of a 70s home. It’s a space that feels like it’s been that way forever, even though it’s entirely new.

When I came across it on Livingetc, I immediately stopped scrolling. The sunken bar grabbed me first — framed by glossy tiles and walnut fins, and paired with antique brass cabinets. It’s chic, cinematic, and dripping with personality, much like a classic 70s home.

The Heart of the Home: A Sunken Bar That Oozes Vintage Glam

Before the transformation, the double-height space felt cold and disconnected. Harsh downlights and straight architectural lines made it more showroom than home. But Alana had a different vision.

She dropped the ceiling, added warm wood slats, and introduced a Breccia marble home bar that glows with burnt sienna and mustard tones. The palette instantly channels that laid-back 1970s California vibe — relaxed, rich, and irresistibly cool, echoing the essence of a 70s home.

Even better, every design choice serves a purpose. The walnut fins behind the bar aren’t just beautiful; they solve a layout challenge by creating privacy between the bedroom and main living spaces. It’s a clever way to blend form and function.

“I loved bringing this LA home to life,” says Alana. “The bar quickly became the heart of the space. We added walnut fins, antique brass cabinets, and dramatic Breccia marble to give it presence.”

Now, the bar feels like the home’s heartbeat — a gathering spot that’s as stylish as it is social. Think soft lighting, vintage glassware, and Fleetwood Mac playing in the background. That’s the feel you get in a well-designed 70s home.

Living Large (and Cozy): The Lounge That Hugs You Back

Large, open spaces are tricky. They can feel too formal, too empty, or just too big. Alana solved that with a custom green mohair velvet sofa that curves perfectly between the living and bar areas.

Made from three fabrics, the sofa anchors both spaces without cutting them off. It feels like a design puzzle that clicks together beautifully. The textures — mohair, leather, and patterned fabrics — add warmth and depth. As a result, the room feels like a big, soft hug.

The palette — walnut, brass, and marble — grounds everything. It’s luxe, but never pretentious. Every surface and material feels collected, not decorated.

The dining room used to be small and overlooked, but not anymore. “We chose key vintage pieces and mixed them with contemporary finds,” says Alana. “Fabrics bring fresh color and pattern, and bold lighting and art make the perfect backdrop for long dinners.”

Now, the space feels balanced and full of life. The vintage-meets-modern approach creates visual interest, while playful patterns make it welcoming. It’s elegant but still ready for wine spills and laughter — exactly how a dining room should be.

A Bedroom Retreat That’s Calm, Cozy, and Clever

The main bedroom got its own thoughtful makeover. High ceilings made the space feel vast, but not necessarily useful. Alana solved that with motorized hanging rods to maximize storage, along with floor-to-ceiling millwork that adds warmth and function.

Soft fabrics, layered textures, and gentle lighting create a restful mood. The palette leans warm and muted, making it feel like a cocoon after a long day.

The Takeaway: 70s Soul, Modern Magic

This Los Angeles home captures the best of both worlds — the soul of the ’70s and the functionality of today. Every choice, from the glossy tiles to the Breccia marble bar, adds personality and purpose. The design ingeniously melds with the iconic elements of a 70s home.

It’s proof that when design is both clever and emotional, a house can truly reflect the people who live there. I can’t stop thinking about that sunken bar.
