Inside HGTV’s 2025 Designer of the Year Home

What happens when a dated 2009 suburban home meets Urbanology’s soulful, layered approach to modern design? Barrel & Beam happens — a breathtaking transformation that earned HGTV’s 2025 Designer of the Year Award for its jaw-dropping kitchen and deeply personal, intentional spaces.

This wasn’t a simple refresh. It was a complete reimagining of what “home” could mean for a busy family of five ready for their next chapter. Before partnering with Urbanology Designs, their house felt disjointed and overwhelmed — the pantry was tiny, the built-ins uninspired, and nothing quite flowed. They dreamed of calm and connection but didn’t know where to start.

Urbanology’s bespoke process brought not only stunning aesthetics but clarity — guiding each decision with purpose, intention, and a touch of that signature soulful edge that’s redefining Texas interiors.

A Kitchen Worthy of HGTV’s Highest Honor

The kitchen — now an HGTV award-winner — is where the home’s transformation truly shines. Inspired by French design, it balances refined craftsmanship with lived-in warmth.

A sculptural round island anchors the space, its curves echoed by a barrel-vaulted ceiling that feels architectural yet soft. Rich navy cabinetry, custom millwork, and expressive marble veining bring depth and luxury without pretension.

Every material choice tells a story: patinated brass, natural stone, tactile woods, and soulful textures. The result is a space that feels timeless, inviting, and deeply personal — proof that “functional” and “beautiful” don’t have to be opposites.

From Cluttered to Cohesive: A Whole-Home Reinvention

Urbanology redefined flow and function throughout the home. The once-cramped living room now opens seamlessly to the backyard through expansive accordion doors, letting light flood the interiors. Exposed beams and a reimagined fireplace ground the space in organic charm.

Creative reinventions abound:

  • The primary suite evolved into a spa-like sanctuary complete with automated shades, marble vanities, and a soaking tub framed by soft natural light.
  • Each child’s bedroom celebrates personality and play: from a fashion-forward teen hideaway to a Pokémon-inspired desk zone and even a whimsical panda-themed room.

“Who says tile has to stop at the floor? Not us.

We carried it all the way up—in addition to stripes and bold shades of blue that some might say shouldn’t work together, yet somehow feel effortlessly luxe.

At Urbanology, we love breaking the rules, mixing patterns, and proving that even the smallest spaces can hold the biggest personality.

Because design should delight as much as it inspires. For us, luxury isn’t about playing it safe; it’s about creating spaces that feel both artful and alive—even if it’s your son’s bathroom. Now, if only he could remember to put the seat down.”

A Design That Honors the Past, While Looking Forward

Urbanology Designs’ founder intentionally infused this home with what she calls “soul and structure” — spaces that feel emotionally rich yet effortlessly organized.

Throughout Barrel & Beam, vintage finds and custom furnishings live alongside smart-home integrations, proving that a thoughtful home can be both beautifully imperfect and intelligently designed.

It’s not just a remodel — it’s a reinvention of how a family lives, connects, and breathes in their space.
