All master interior decorators agree that the most beautifully decorated spaces are always a background of modern in conjunction with a touch of antiquity in the foreground, a style that has become known in modern interior decoration as elegantly distressed. This lovely 377ft2 (35m2) studio apartment in the heart of Saint Georges in Lyon, France designed by Maison Hand, is the perfect example of this style of décor and is designed around allowing this small space to take on a much more grandiose feeling. Clean black and white lines give this studio a very streamlined appearance, allowing each part of the apartment to flow well into the other. The modernist architecture of the studio’s design itself is contrasted nicely by the wood and earth tones of the furniture throughout the apartment.

Wood, wicker, and other natural components are in primary focus here as much of the studio apartment’s decorum are differing crafted pieces from these folk materials. Woven wicker baskets serve as on offset piece in the element of straight lines and over all linear feel that is the underlying basis of this 377ft2  (35m2) ’s design. These decorative baskets also serve as an elemental assist to the woven wicker light covers over the hanging fixtures. These woven lighting baskets accentuate the apartment’s high roof and provide the cozy studio with the feeling of having much more additional space.

Mirrors throughout the apartment also serve that feeling of the apartment being much larger. A well placed square mirror in the corner of the living space heightens the spacious feeling of the main quarters, reflecting back the two wooden chairs and much of the dining area. A collection of circler mirrors over the bed serve the same purpose and give the impression of having much more room in the small section of the apartment. The overall flow of the studio also serves to heighten that feeling of space, with the stairs leading to the bed area being small enough to fit into the corner of the room but large enough to provide comfortable transition to the sectioned off space.

The framed art and photographs throughout the apartment as well as the wicker basket table pieces and all white pitchers and candlesticks give the studio a hip and cultured feel. All of these elements combine to give this studio space a feeling of youth and vitality while also exuding an aura of antiquity and importance. Any master interior decorator would agree that this 377ft2 (35m2) studio apartment is the epitome of elegantly distressed.
