Shopkeeper and restauranteur couple has come up with a timeless home built with elements that span centuries. Carey is owner of Pigeonhole, a vintage homewares shop, while Erv is the man behind The Whip and Lucy’s East Side Diner restaurants in Vancouver. No wonder, these professionals have got the skill set such as knowing how to entertain, make people comfortable, craft attractive centerpieces, and exactly who to call whenever something needs to be fixed or built. Together, and with a bit of help from friend-contractor Mack Kurtz, the pair’s biz-savvy prowess allowed for the remarkable transformation of this 1952 Victoria, BC house within just one summertime.
Having four bedrooms, this home perfectly suits the growing family quite well. Each room has been reinvented to suit the modern lifestyle, providing maximum comfort to the family along with almost endless entertaining possibilities. Previously unused space was turned into a convenient mini-espresso bar right within the home. Overall, the home design adapts a functional and open layout with generous counter space. Adding personal charm came easy, since traditional objects and pieces were simply culled from Carey’s store to perfectly match the house structure and give it an old world character.
The kitchen and dining space were made one to serve as the ideal cozy place for small parties and gatherings. A couch rests on one side and a couple of chairs on the other, with the brownish colors complementing the vintage map in the backdrop. Elegant trophies that fascinatingly stimulate potted plants are set alongside the large frame. The unique and classy three-bulb lamp hover above the candle holders and floral centerpiece on the long wooden table.
The open space extends to the kitchen where the family can be together amidst daily activities and doing multiple things. Erv often cooks while his wife works at the dining table, and they both get to keep an eye on their 4-year-old daughter playing in the living room. The bricked wall is coated in white just like the cabinetry and glossy countertops. Numerous utensils and kitchen accessories line the prep area of the home, but are quite organized either within the white cupboards or stacked on top of each other.
Their bedroom looks sophisticated with the huge bed resting at the center of wooden floors and side tables, while colors, patterns, prints and vintage collections make up their daughter Lucia’s room. A 5-foot window brightens the master bathroom, where light can pass through the hallway when the door is left open. Towels are bath accessories are neatly tucked in a tall wooden cabinet that matches the luxurious sink cabinet.
