French Farmhouse Restored into Luxury Home

In 1999, Heather Depuis and her family made a life-changing move from the UK to the rolling countryside of Brittany, France. Their new home was a traditional Breton longère – a low, stone farmhouse typical of the region, rich with character but in need of vision and care. What followed was a complete restoration project that not only revived the property but also transformed it into a vibrant, welcoming family home infused with Provencal charm.

Breathing New Life into a Longère

The longère, with its thick stone walls and elongated shape, is a hallmark of rural Brittany. Heather approached the restoration with sensitivity, ensuring the building’s rustic authenticity remained intact while introducing light, colour, and comfort. Exposed beams were carefully preserved, original stonework revealed, and new life given to the farmhouse’s sturdy bones.

A Bold Palette of Colour

What sets Heather’s home apart is her fearless use of colour. Inspired by the houses of Provence, where sun-baked walls glow in ochres, saffron, and turquoise, she brought that same energy into the Breton setting. Walls were washed in rich, saturated tones that shift with the daylight, creating warmth and vibrancy even during Brittany’s cooler, misty days.

Contrasts of terracotta, deep blues, and sunlit yellows animate each space, while patterned tiles and painted shutters echo the Mediterranean influence. The result is a home that feels both rooted in its Breton context and joyfully connected to the spirit of the South of France.

Provençal Influences in Brittany

Heather’s design vision transcended mere decoration. From rustic wooden furniture and wrought-iron details to linens in bold checks and florals, every detail is layered with Provençal character. Yet, this is no pastiche – the farmhouse speaks of a family’s life and adaptation, merging Brittany’s sturdy traditions with the joie de vivre of Provence.

A Family Home with Heart

Today, Heather’s longère is more than a restored property; it is a family sanctuary that tells a story of courage, creativity, and cultural blending. Each room is a canvas of vibrant hues and tactile textures, a reminder of how thoughtful design can elevate and transform not just a house, but a way of life.

Takeaway: Heather’s project is a lesson in embracing colour and culture when designing a home. Her fearless approach shows how inspiration drawn from another region can breathe fresh life into traditional architecture, creating a space that is both deeply personal and timelessly inviting.
