For ten years, Alexandre de Betak nurtured a dream — a home that would feel as though it were carved straight from the earth itself, wild yet elegant, raw yet carefully curated. After five years of searching for the perfect location and four more of design and construction, his vision finally took shape in the Tramuntana region of Majorca. Perched on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, this extraordinary “cave house” has become both his creative retreat and a timeless lesson in imperfection.
A Vision in Stone and Curves
Unlike most modern homes, the cave house avoids sharp angles and rigid lines. Instead, it flows in gentle curves, echoing natural rock formations and sea-swept cliffs. Every surface, inside and out, has been touched by de Betak’s hand — a designer, events producer, and art director renowned for orchestrating unforgettable fashion shows for Dior and Rodarte. His cave house feels less like a built structure and more like an extension of the island itself.
A Summer Haven by the Sea
For de Betak, the house is the ultimate summer escape. Nestled in a small coastal village, it embraces sweeping views of the Mediterranean that change with the light of day. With its seamless blend of nature and design, it offers a lifestyle where indoors and outdoors coexist, and relaxation becomes second nature.
The interiors are crafted with abundant stone, sculpted into shelves, alcoves, and even lamp bases for the designer’s beloved bulbs — a nod to his theatrical eye for lighting. Wood beams and natural finishes add warmth, underscoring the eco-friendly philosophy of the project.
A Guest Cabin in the Trees
One of the most challenging — and charming — features is the guest cabin, built around a tree. The construction team faced countless hurdles to preserve it, but the result is a whimsical hideaway that elevates the cave house into a true sanctuary for creativity and connection.
An Unfinished Lesson
For all its beauty, de Betak insists the house is not “perfect” — nor should it be.
“It’s the most fun project I have ever done. I am a perfectionist, but you can’t make it perfect. The house was made for life, and it should never be really finished. It’s a good lesson. What in life is ever really finished?”
This philosophy reveals itself in the details: the raw stone walls, the irregular nooks, and the way the home invites nature inside. It is a place that evolves, just like life itself.
Wild Elegance by the Mediterranean
Alexandre de Betak’s cave house is more than a summer getaway. It is a bold statement about design, nature, and the beauty of imperfection. With its organic curves, stone-carved spaces, and ever-present Mediterranean views, it feels both grounded and untamed — a home that could just as easily serve as a retreat for a season or a permanent residence.
In Majorca’s Tramuntana mountains, overlooking the endless blue of the sea, this cave house is not simply a dwelling — it is a dream made stone.
